Parapet Options
There are a surprisingly large number of options when making decisions about bridges
Parapet Heights
The height of the parapet will depend on the user and the attitude of the person responsible for its safe use
Foot Bridges usually have a height of 1150mm
Cycleway Bridges usually have a height of 1400mm
Bridleway Bridges usually have a height of 1800mm and the lower 600mm is close boarded
Parapet Styles
The basic style is a Post and Rail
Our Budget Foot Bridges and Contractor Foot Bridges have 3 rails.
Some people like an additional rail but our Designer (me) thinks the extra rail encourages climbing and is discouraged
Cycelway Bridges have 4 rails but the increased spacing seems to make the urge to climb reduce.
Bridleway Bridges have 1800mm high parapets usually but some PROW clients provide lower ones on cost ground and post notices asking riders to dismount and walk their horses.
Both Footbridges and Cycleway Bridges can have spindles. These reduce the openings and make falling through the openings less likely
